Global Carbon Registry Governance
At Global Carbon Registry, we operate within a robust governance framework designed to uphold accountability, integrity, and transparency across all organizational activities, processes, and personnel.
Global Carbon Registry Standard Advisory Board
An independent Advisory Board has been established to oversee and govern the Global Carbon Registry Standard, beginning with Version 1. We are pleased to welcome Lee Barton and Wayne Sharpe as founding members of this board, tasked with safeguarding the credibility and rigour of the Standard.
- Lee Barton offers extensive expertise in sustainability strategy and organizational transformation.
- Wayne Sharpe brings deep knowledge of certification processes and sustainability benchmarks.
Together, they will guide our stewardship of carbon credits and promote best practices in the Voluntary Carbon Market, ensuring the Standard evolves in alignment with environmental priorities and market developments.
Commercial Independence
The Advisory Board functions independently from Global Carbon Registry’s day-to-day commercial operations. It consists of a minimum of two members—a Chair and a Secretary—initially appointed by the Management Board. Over time, current Advisory Board members may nominate their successors.
The Board reviews and either endorses or rejects amendments to the Standard proposed by the Technical Committee. It may also be called upon to assess processes for the introduction or revision of methodologies. Leveraging their expertise and market insights, Advisory Board members advise on enhancements to the Standard.
Board members are remunerated for their contributions. A complete list of current members is available on our About page.
Global Carbon Registry Management Board
The Management Board, comprising our Directors, is responsible for strategic direction, client onboarding, and overall governance. The Board also evaluates the eligibility of greenhouse gas (GHG) projects under the Global Carbon Registry Standard. Profiles of the Management Board members can be found on our Teams page.
Global Carbon Registry Technical Committee
Our Technical Committee consists of internal experts dedicated to maintaining and advancing the Global Carbon Registry Standard and developing new methodologies. Revisions are initiated in response to client feedback, market trends, and public consultation. More information on the Technical Committee is available on our About page.
Legal Framework
Under our General Terms and Conditions, disputes are first subject to mediation. If unresolved, matters will be referred to the Court in London, England.
Conflict of Interest & Code of Conduct
Global Carbon Registry enforces a strict Code of Conduct for all staff and representatives to prevent and mitigate conflicts of interest. A dedicated Code of Conduct for Verification and Validation Bodies (VVBs) is also in place.
Complaints Procedure
We operate a formal complaints process applicable to certified GHG projects and approved methodologies.
Global Carbon Registry does not own or sell carbon credits listed on its platform. Our role is strictly limited to providing the technical infrastructure for project registration, verification processing, and the allocation and transfer of associated claims within our Registry.
